An astounding 700,000 cars were stolen in the U.S. last year.

While that’s actually a decrease of 3.3 percent, at the same time the number of newer vehicles being stolen (cars from ’09-’11) is increasing, at least according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Intuitively you would think newer cars would be more difficult to jack, but apparently not! Which really should emphasize a car owner’s need for aftermarket security.

The top most-stolen new vehicles from the new survey were:

1) The 2009 Nissan Altima

2) The 2009 Honda Accord

3) The 2009 Honda Civic

4) The 2009 Dodge Charger, and

5) (Motorcycle alert!) the 2009 Yamaha YZF-R6

See the list of newer cars from MSN Autos here.

The first set is photos of a push-button install on a Nissan Altima, and the second is of a top-secret not-yet-released product install on a Honda Accord!

We definitely hope that you didn’t miss this Motor Trend Radio spot from June 9, Viper fans.

If you did, let’s catch you up!

Directed president Mike Simmons stopped by for a quick chat on the “Truck Trend Hour” with host Alan Taylor about the recent release of the Viper SmartStart 3.0 mobile app.

Taylor, who has a Viper SmartStart installed on his truck, gave the product a great review and recommended it other truck owners, anyone interested in controlling their car from their smartphone or in the cloud-connected car.

Some other highlights:

Host Alan Taylor: “I love my remote start, I have been a big fan of these for many years … I think I am on my third Viper remote start for different vehicles.”

Mike Simmons: “We have an army of engineers that take literally every car that comes off the line — every trim level; every year, make and model — we bring the car into our shop, get underneath the dash and tap into the computer of the car and really understand that data words that are coming out of the car.”

Alan Taylor: “Be able to start [your car] in inclement weather, or hot weather, and have it ready for you to be able to get in to a warm or cooled-off car. I like it, I have it on my truck.”

That’s right, the famous spoiler-sporting, road-ripping muscle car of “The Fast and the Furious” fame.
